DEO DETOX GUIDE

When switching from antiperspirant to aluminum-free deodorant, it can take some time for you body to adjust. Here's what to expect during the deo detox period.

Note that this is just a guide - your body may follow a different timeline!

WEEK1

Apply your aluminum-free deodorant to clean, dry armpits in the morning and again throughout the day as often as desired. You’re unlikely to experience much sweat or BO during Week 1.

WEEK2

You are sweating more. Your pits are purging the aluminum in your sweat glands that’s left over from antiperspirant. You may have more body odor as the odor-causing bacteria on your skin recalibrates.

WEEK3

You’ll sweat more and smell less as your body continues to adjust.

WEEK4

Odor and sweat begin to disappear as your body now relies on your aluminum-free deodorant to do its job.

PRO TIP

If you experience body odor during this period, use a cooling + Cleansing Wipe under your arms, allow the area to dry and then reapply your aluminum-free deodorant as often needed.

FAQ

If you were previously using an antiperspirant, your body needs roughly a month to recalibrate. Your pits will detoxify by purging the aluminum and other chemicals that have been stored in your skin cells, and the balance of bacteria on your skin will change now that it doesn’t have chemicals suppressing it. You may start to sweat more and have more body odor for a few weeks as your body detoxes, but the good news is that we have great tips about getting through this detoxing process.
While we can’t answer this with absolute certainty for every single person, chances are good that you will not smell if you’re using the right aluminum-free deodorant for your skin. If you’ve tried an aluminum-free deodorant and still got BO after following the steps during the post-antiperspirant detox period, it doesn’t mean all aluminum-free deodorants “don’t work.” It probably means that you didn’t find a formula that works well for your body.
Aluminum-free deodorants all have one thing in common, which is that they leave out the aluminum used in antiperspirants. But not all of them are “better.” Some aluminum-free deodorants are made with high quality, plant-based ingredients while some may still include things you may not want to use on your underarms, like alcohol or petroleum-based ingredients.
