DeAndre Hopkins X Oars + Alps

Deandre’s take on men’s grooming, natural products and why he chose to partner with Oars + Alps.

Why did you choose Oars + Alps over other brands?

I chose Oars + Alps over other brands obviously because it’s natural and environmentally friendly. They’ve created amazing products and a brand I’m proud to be part of. But how it started, the whole story of being a women-founded startup, that touched me because my mom is a single mom and worked hard for everything she has. So I understand that grind. And there aren’t a lot of women’s startup companies that are successful, so I felt like being part of something that is hopefully a trend someday is bigger than just me.

Do you have a favorite Oars + Alps product?

Yes I do. My favorite Oars + Alps product is the deodorant. I’m an athletic guy. I work out a lot. I move around a lot. So deodorant is a plus in my life. When I first started using it, I wasn’t using the best natural products before, so it took a while to detox the armpits a little bit, but once I got over that it was amazing. I use it daily.

What’s your favorite O + A deodorant scent?

Fresh Ocean Splash. It’s really clean, and strong enough that it keeps me fresh without being overpowering. It works all day, even through intense workouts, heat and game days.

What advice would you give to your younger self about grooming?

Ooh. That’s a good one. The advice I would give to my younger self about grooming would be to use cold water to rinse off my face and to exfoliate. I didn’t exfoliate when I was younger, but as I got older I realized how important exfoliation is to the skin.

What advice would you give to your younger self about using natural products?

The advice I would give to my younger self would be to use natural products. I did not use natural products and I didn’t have the best skin. No one around me was using natural products, so it was hard for me to know anything about the natural world of products, especially face products. High school was a tough time for me, so if I knew anything about Oars + Alps or natural products as a kid I would have definitely jumped on it. But I’m happy I did.

If you had one product to include in your pre-game ritual, what would it be?

It would be the hand cream. I have not the softest hands, not the roughest. But you know, I’m a football player and having soft hands on the football field helps. So rubbing that on my hands before I put my gloves on to help me catch the ball a little easier, that’s my pre-game ritualOars + Alps product.

What is your favorite product to travel with?

My favorite product to travel with would have to be the lip balm. I fly a lot so obviously dehydration and hydration are big for me. Once I land, I’m either working out or going to do something active so the lip balm is important because your lips get chapped a lot when you travel. The lip balm is amazing. It’s very good, and it lasts a long time.

What is your big message to share with the world regarding grooming?

My big message to tell the world about grooming is it’s important for men to groom and take care of themselves and do the steps that we think aren’t important to grooming that a lot of women do. Like using things properly, washing your face, exfoliating, those steps. I think that’s something that men look at as a women’s thing. But I think your woman would appreciate it if you groomed properly.
